History

As early as in the 1930's the clerk Laura Holmström and midwife Gerda Gers started to collect photographs and objects from Fiskars. The localhistory museum became reality when the Fiskars Localhistory Society was founded on March 9th 1940. Laura Holmström became chairman and carried on until her death in 1965.

The Fiskars company gave the Society right to use a few rooms in the old office building from 1837. On October 30th 1949, only one day before the iron works 300 year anniversary, the Museum was inaugurated.

The Museum was expanded in 1983 with the Slaggbuilding. When iron ore is produced you have to separate the ore from the stone blocks by heating them up. The remaining secondary product is called "slag." At the iron works many buildings were built with slag tiles. The Slaggbuildning´s method of construction is not confirmed but it is possible that it´s built by a special technique using slagchips.

The Slaggbuildning was constructed in 1842 as a canteen for the nearby workers. Later it was used as a rooming house for workerfamilies and widows. The house stood emty from 1971-1983. Thanks to an agreement with the limited company Fiskars Oy Ab the local association got the posession of the house for 50 years. Thus the association has been able to make facilities on the ground floor for special exhibitions.

The old baking- and mangleshed and some other facilities in the outhouse of the museumbuildning was turned in to the museum´s pedagogic facilities in 2006. Since 2007 here has been arranged for example timetravels for children.

In the gentry's room you can find a copy of the beautiful painting of Karin von Julin (1871-1914) by Louis Sparre.
